Epilepsy centers provide a team approach to caring for people with seizures and epilepsy. Testing is available to diagnose whether a person has seizures and the type of epilepsy they may have. Epilepsy experts can help people explore all treatment options.
The goal is to get the best seizure control possible.
Treatments may include medications, surgery, devices, and dietary therapy. Newer approaches and research trials are also available at many centers.
Experts at an epilepsy center usually include:
- Neurologists who specialize in treating seizures (also called epileptologists)
- Neurosurgeons
- Neuropsychologists
- Neuropsychiatrists
- Nurse specialists
- EEG (electroencephalogram) technologists
- Social workers
- Others with training and experience in epilepsy care
Accrediting Epilepsy Centers
The National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) supports strong specialized epilepsy centers. They provide accreditation of centers that offer medical and surgical epilepsy care.
