Epilepsy Foundation Celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

The Epilepsy Foundation strives to be an unwavering ally for people living with epilepsy, regardless of age, race or ethnic community. Since 2012, we have been working to raise awareness and education of seizures and epilepsy in Asian Americans communities. While we know that 3 in 200 Asian Americans in the U.S. live with epilepsy, there is so much we have yet to learn.

Our Goal

This May, we are proud to recognize Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and celebrate the culture, traditions and numerous contributions and achievements of Asian Americans to our country. We are redoubling our efforts and partnering with Epilepsy Foundation affiliates across the country and Asian American communities to:

• Raise awareness about epilepsy, 
• Learn how to recognize and treat seizures, and 
• Work together as we #DareTo improve the lives of people living with epilepsy. 

What We Are Doing 

Affiliates in Hawaii, San Diego, Ohio and the northwest are working with community leaders, local physicians and student groups. Their work will break down barriers to information, equip leaders with the facts about epilepsy and build strong partnerships for the future. 

As a first step, we are helping to ensure that all people can access information about epilepsy, which is essential to our mission. We are excited to work with the Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations (AAPCHO) to develop translated fact sheets about epilepsy and seizures. 

• Fact sheets in both traditional and simplified Chinese will be distributed in print and online to community health centers around the country. 
• Fact sheets in Vietnamese and Korean will be released during summer 2015. 

The Importance of Working Together

It is crucial that we talk about epilepsy and seizures. All too often, epilepsy is not discussed due to fear or misunderstanding. It is up to us to continue the #DareTo campaign – #Dare to share our stories and experiences surrounding epilepsy and #DareTo work together and be a partner in every community.
