Ketogenic Diet Trainings: Opportunities for Dietitians and Neurologists

Epilepsy News From: Tuesday, August 08, 2017

Over the past few years, some new meetings have emerged as a great way for dietitians (and occasionally neurologists) to learn from experts and share their own knowledge about the use of dietary therapies. These meetings allow keto teams to either train completely or become more proficient and are by no means substitutes for the biannual international ketogenic diet symposium.

In this month’s KetoNews, I profile three of the larger meetings that have occurred this past year. For more information, please contact the organizers.

Keto College

Hosted and organized by Drs. Helen Cross, Liz Neal, and Emma Williams, Keto College was designed to train ketogenic diet centers from the start. This meeting is sponsored by the U.K. charity Matthews Friends and just occurred from June 27-29, 2017, in East Grinstead, United Kingdom.

In its second year, this meeting was larger than the first with 100 attendees from 14 different countries. The first day was “medical,” followed by 2 full days for “dietetics,” although many attendees came to all three days.

Expect this meeting to occur in June 2018 in the U.K. followed by the European GLUT1 biannual meeting.

Keto University

Hosted and organized by the formula company Nutricia, this meeting is now in its third consecutive year. Designed for ketogenic dietitians who have prior experience in using ketogenic diets, rather than training from scratch, this meeting is more of an opportunity for experienced dietitians to learn about new developments and share expertise.

The most recent meeting occurred June 10-12, 2017, in Chicago and was 3 days long. Experienced ketogenic nurse Claire Chee RN from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia provided the keynote evening lecture.

This meeting will likely occur a fourth time. For more information, dietitians should contact their local Nutricia representative or look online at www.nutricialearningcenter.com/en/keto-university.

Ketogenic Diet Summit

This meeting was held in Phoenix, Arizona, and was hosted by both The Charlie Foundation and Barrow Neurological Institute on March 11-12, 2017.

Over the 2 days of this meeting, approximately 200 neurologists and dietitians from the area listened to lectures from experts in the ketogenic diet field and shared knowledge.

This meeting will not be repeated in 2018 to avoid conflicting with the 6th Global Symposium on Ketogenic Therapies (being held in Jeju, South Korea).
