Hand Clapping?

Mon, 05/18/2020 - 01:18
I'm grandmother to a 5-month old with epilepsy. The parents use loud hand clapping to help bring the baby out of his seizures. Is anyone else doing this? Is it effective? I'm searching the internet, my key word searches find nothing about this!

Hi,Thank you for posting. It’s best to follow-up with your grandson’s healthcare team for further information on what is most effective for stopping his seizures. Additionally, you may contact our Epilepsy and Seizures 24/7 Helpline: 1-800-332-1000, contactus@efa.org, where a trained information specialist can connect you to resources, provide referrals and additional support.epilepsy.com/helpline

I”m a person with epilepsy

I”m a person with epilepsy and I agree with ConnectHelp’s answer. I’ve never heard of this method either though. My epilepsy started at the age of 19 though and I have no idea what methods the doctors may advise for a child that young. Generally speaking, a seizure starts and stops on it’s own though, so something external doesn’t usually stop it. Now, if the parents are checking the time of when the seizure starts and stops based on when the child becomes alert to the “loud hand clapping” than, it may be effective because of the child’s age and development. When I first started having seizures, people would get in my face, say my name three times in a row and ask me if I was ok. They would do this for several minutes during my seizure and then when I became aware, I saw and heard them and could respond with words. But, a child that is only 5 months old may only be able to demonstrate that he is aware and coming out of the seizure and can respond to sounds by moving in that direction. Hope that makes sense and I wish you well in being able to discuss your concerns with the healthcare team and his parents.
