Epilepsy Surgery, California Pacific

Hello everybody. Well, after many attempts to curb my seizures with medication, my doctor and I have decided to look in to seeing if I am a candidate for surgery. At this point in my life I am quite comfortable with it because *nothing* could be as frightening as having a seizure. Based on my doctor's advice, I am being referred to California Pacific Epilepsy Center in San Francisco. I have done a little bit of research so far (I'm just getting in to it) and have noticed that it is not a Level 4 center. As far as I can tell this center offers all of the services that the other centers do, as far as testing, surgery, etc. Has anyone here on epilepsy.com had experience with this center? I would love to hear from you if you have! Thank you!

You need to as much research as possible on their program there. I don't know anything about their program since I live in Orange County. There are good number of level 4 centers in the LA and Orange County. I've looked into getting the surgery but I'm not sure I'll be a canidate for the surgery. I don't like the side effects on the meds which is a reason I'm thinking of it. I'm getting a recedding hair line and I'm 23! I don't need to be bald soon. It's hard to get an exact weight! I've had a shoulder surgery due to a seizure and a mild car accident in a parking lot. I want it for the fact if I have my own place and no one is there, what will happen? That scares me

Yeah, I'm pretty much in the same sitch- bad car accident, and the side effects from the meds are driving me crazy. My memory is GONE! Plus they just don't work.... I've noticed that there are quite a few Level 4 centers out there. I'm wondering if that REALLY means a lot? I mean, it looks to me like there is a comprehensive program in place at Cal Pacific, just wondering about how valid the whole "level" thing is. Does anyone else have input on this? Or surgery in general? Thanks!

Hello isaint,

I live in northern california and had my brain surgery done in the bay area at Kasier in 8-8-08.  I was in the same rout you are where I had been on every med they ever put ou in every combination for 44 years.  Finially I met and started working with my 3 doctor's an nurse and it took almost a 1/2 year but I was able to have the surgery this year. I think if the doctor's say you qualify to have the surgery I would do it.  I was scared and I was also excited. But I have not regreted it at all.  I wish you the very best and if you ever feel like talking here is my e-mail (milocharliezoey@yahoo.com) I come up to the bay alot so if you need ant support just e-mail ok.  Take care
