Epilepsy Surgery due to "California Encephalitis"

Wed, 05/13/2015 - 18:30

I was looking for others who have had a right temporal lobectomy with hippocampus removal due to brain damage caused by an encephalitis. My daughter became ill in 2012 because of an mosquito bite that caused her to have "California Encephalitis". She has now been diagnosed as a drug resistant epileptic, and is a surgical candidate for surgery. Her chances of being seizure free are only about 60% to 65% because of the encephalitis. If anyone has had a similar illness that caused brain damage and has had the surgery, I would love to hear feedback on your experiences.

My husband developed epilepsy

My husband developed epilepsy after an illness (they think it might have been encephalitis but can't be sure) in 2013/Southern California but we have never heard of "california encephalitis" from any doctor. He was in status, then the induced a seizure, but the time he was in status status seems to have damaged his hippocampus-both sides. none of the meds they've tried (many combinations) have fully controlled his epilepsy. The neuro is recommending VNS.  I'm a bit worried about having him do this. Never have they recommended lobectomy. His seizures don't have a focal point, if that makes a difference.  I will be following this thread to see what else I can learn from others. Please post if you have information!
