Left Temporal Lobe Surgery next week

Mon, 04/29/2013 - 17:23
Hello. I cant find any recent ongoing discussions of Left Temporal lobe surgery. My husband will be having his surgery next week, after 17 years of seizures and 8 years of trying to make a decision on surgery. My anxiety is beyond belief. I am trying to hold it together for him and our 4 children. I find most success stories are of RIGHT temporal lobectomies. Has anyone recently recovered from Left TL surgery that might have some words of wisdom or advice on getting through this procedure? Thank you ajard

Hi, I have seen quite a lot of temporal lobe surgery patients. A large majority have a seizure reduction of more than 75%, some are still seizure-free one year later. When all the tests have been performed, the surgeons work out how far they can go- they are very careful not to injure the language centre. After surgery, some patients show improvements in cognition, memory and word finding, as energy can be used for higher functions, rather than seizures.

Hi, I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 12, and had left temporal lobe surgery 14 months when I was 23. I have been 100% seizure free since! I have some trouble with word recollection although no one notices it but me, but it is no worse now than it was before I had the surgery. The only advice I have is to make sure your husband has someone to talk to about it. Going in I thought the surgery was going to fix all of me. It fixed the seizures but it didn't fix the side effects of the meds (generally sleep and mood troubles) or my minor speech impairment, and I was pretty disappointed about that at first. Talking about it with other people made me realize how lucky I am, and now I am just grateful I don't have seizures anymore and have my life back. Hope it goes well!
