Memory Problems with surgery?

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 09:44
Hi everyone!..I just had a question...I am having left temporal lobectomy on 12/18, what kind of side effects and memory problems have you, or anyone you know, had with this surgery?...My dad is really concerned that I am going to get amnesia and forget him...I have tried to put his mind to ease by saying that it isn't possible, but he isn't convinced...I have also heard of people have emotional disturbances with this surgery...Needless to say, I am scared to death, so any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hi :)

I had that exact op at the end of July this year, and its the best thing I've ever done! It hasn't affected my memory to any great extent, its not any worse than what it was like before (and then it was only mild forgetfulness). I didn't even have short term forgetfullness. When I woke up, the first thing my mum and dad did was want to know if I knew who they were - once I said hi mum and dad (I'm 19) they were so relieved!! The only side effect at all is that apparently it has made me more hyper - a side effect i can deal with! From the minute I woke up I haven't had a single seizure - going from having them 2 - 3 times a week!

Don't be scared to death, speaking from extreme personal experience I can say you'll be fine! Ok its normal to be worried - who wouldn't be, but you'll be fine! The doctors wouldn't have booked you to have it unless you were 100% the right one for it :)

Anymore questions/advice, my emails flippinmental90@hotmail.com

all the best :)

I am glad to hear how well you did with your surgery as well! You sound the same way I do! The only thing I had problems with was mild as well.  I kept wanting to call  the doc. that did my surgery this other doctor who did my WADA test even though I knew it was not the right name. I go to West Virginia University Hospital in Morgantown, WV where the WVU Mountaineers play thier football games, so therefore with it being a training hospital with a lot of resident doctors, I have seen plenty! It is also the only hospital in the state that does this surgery. I am so glad to hear how well you are doing and hope things continue to do well. With you being 19 that is a great advantage to you. i am ony 27 so therefore I was told the same thing because I am in my late 20's and my brain is now at its peak! Best wishes!

Hi trisper

I just had Left Temporal Lobe surgery last month on November 4th.  I did extremley well and my recovery was great. I can't remember what he said exactly what he did though (the technical term he used is kind of hard to pronounce). I have had an excellent recovery. I was told that one of the greatest advantages I had was my age. I am 27 and being in my mid-20's was great. The only thing that I can't remeber was during the time I was in recovery right after the actual operation. I was in the hospital for 4 days with my banage on before it was safe for me to take it off. I remember everything while I was there, but I did sleep a lot. The only thing I really had a hard time remembering was the neurosurgeon who porformed on me. That however, only has to do with the fact that I only saw him twice before that which was mainly when he told me i could have the surgery done. In fact, I wanted to refer him by the name of this other neurologist that gave me my WADA test even though I knew it was not him. I saw him 2 weeks after my surgery to get my stitches out and I told him that i was doing great and he even  told me how successful I was. In fact, he let me go back to work at the minimum time period which is 6 weeks.  It is now December 5th, and I am great. When they shaved the small spot on my head they did it very cosmetically to where all I have to do is keep my long hair down and you can not even see it. My hair is growing very quickley and my scar will be covered pretty soon. I do hope things work out very well with you and Good luck!

Best wishes! Anna
