Memory Problems with Surgery?

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 09:49
I am scheduled for a left temporal lobectomy on 12/18 and I just had a couple of questions...my dad is afraid that I am going to get amnesia and forget him...I have tried to put his mind at ease saying that it isn't possible, but I don't think I am being very convincing...also, I was wondering if anyone has had any type of emotional disturbances with this surgery?..thanks!

Hi trisper:

I had a left temporal lobectomy in July 2007 and consider it to have been hugely successful.  I did do some things when I first came home (word searches, sudoku, etc) to help my short term memory, but I didn't suffer any significant memory issues.  Did a few strange things, but nothing to be overly alarmed about  If memory is affected at all, it's more likely to be short term memory, so hopefully that would reassure your Dad somewhat.

As for "emotional disturbances", I did find myself on something of an emotional roller coaster after the surgery.  This apparently is more common in those of us who have surgery on the left side, but most people I have spoken with who've had this issue have improved with time (as have I).

I hope this helps answer your questions somewhat.  Best of luck with your surgery!

Hi Trisper

I had a Left Temporal Lobectomy 8-8-08 and it was the best thing I have ever did.  As soon as I could I stated reading and writing online to my daughter everyday to help with my memory.  I was worried I would forget names and numbers but I just stayed positived, and was reasured by my doctors and just tell your dad to have faith.  Good Luck

My daughter had left temp. surgery on March 5, 08 and has not had any significant memory loss. She is doing SO MUCH better. No sz. so far. I understand how your dad feels. I was so worried. When my daughter first came out of surgery, I had to make sure she knew who we were. I asked and when she said "Mom", I knew she was going to be ok. She has just a tiny bit of short term memory issues, but she writes things down and we have made adjustments. It is by far the best thing we have ever done for her. I pray all goes as well as her surgery. She just started driving again for the first time in 3 yrs.
