Our daughter is having functional hemispherectomy

Thu, 08/17/2006 - 07:57
Our 20 yr. old daughter is having a functional hemispherectomy on Sept. 11, 2006. Does anyone have or know of anyone who has had this procedure done? She already has left hemiparisys and suffers from seizures. She has 60% of the right side of her brain absent (not working) from a perinatal stroke and the other 40% of the right side of her brain is causing the seizures. I have read up about the surgery but want to know how long will it take my daughter to get back to her normal state after the surgery. Please help with any info!

Last January I had a temporal lobectomy so I can give you an idea of the length of time it takes to recover from surgery. Yet, as I'm more than twice as old as your daughter, chances are good my recovery time took longer than if I had been 20. (Sadly; back then, few meds or tests even existed, amd surgery was not near as common as today) However here is a page from epilepsy.com: http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/hemispherectomy.html There are patient write-ups at epilepsy.com also. I saw them when I went to that site and searched 'functional hemispherectomy' best wishes you & your daughter ~sol
