VNS

Sun, 10/01/2017 - 17:45
I just recently had a vns put in for my epilepsy. It all happened very fast after I made the decision to have it put in. They just squeezed me in their schedule because the surgeon was booked so far out. So because it happened so fast no one really let me know what to expect after my surgery or what would or wouldn't be normal. I'm having a lot of pain and stiffness in my neck still, and find it hard to breath sometimes. And how long should the recovery be? Are these things normal? Is there other things that I should expect?

I had VNS implanted in 1999.

I had VNS implanted in 1999.  I don't recall having too much pain from the surgery.  I quickly got used to the device going off at its normal setting but I did cough a little at first when I used the magnet to set it off at its higher mode.  I was treated with VNS for five years and never did get full seizure control.  I also gave it up because I enjoy singing in choir and it was a hassle to wear the magnet (this shuts the device off) every time I wanted to sing.  Also it tightened the voice up a little over time so that I can no longer reach as high notes as I once did.  I'm planning to try RNS next.

Hey guys.  I've had mine

Hey guys.  I've had mine implanted for 6 years. I healed up completely from the surgery in about 5-6 weeks.  Mine caused a slightly raspy voice for the 30 seconds that it goes off for around the first 3 years or so that I had it, after which I seemed to adjust to it, and it stopped effecting my voice.  If I run the magnet it still has a slight effect.  As for the seeming tightness in your chest, I noticed that as well, but only at the very beginning.  I think that is when its settling into place.

How are you doing? I just had

How are you doing? I just had the implant a few days ago, my neck & jaw  are horribly stiff and the left side of my head feels like it’s got a railroad spike in it. Please tell me this gets better!
