Janice Buelow, PhD, FAAN to Join the Epilepsy Foundation as Vice President of Programs and Research

Buelow

Distinguished epilepsy advocate, researcher, educator and clinical nurse specialist Janice Buelow, PhD, FAAN, will take the helm as our new Vice President of Programs and Research effective July 1, 2013. Dr. Buelow will oversee the Foundation’s nationwide epilepsy education and research programs.

Dr. Buelow brings to the Epilepsy Foundation an impressive and longstanding commitment to supporting people affected by epilepsy. She has focused on the self-management of epilepsy and quality of life for individuals and families living with the condition. By identifying key stressors in families, Dr. Buelow has developed highly effective management techniques for parents of children who live with epilepsy and intellectual disability. Her insightful research has been published in interdisciplinary and nursing journals including Developmental and Child Neurology, Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Epilepsy and Behavior.

“We personally and professionally respect Jan Buelow's valuable contributions and insights to the Epilepsy Foundation as a past affiliate and national board member, researcher and clinical nurse specialist," said Phil Gattone, president and CEO. "Jan brings a level of passion and experience to our leadership team that couldn't be more timely -- when the epilepsy community is stronger than ever, speaking with a unified voice to demand a greater understanding of living with seizures, better therapies in a timeframe that matters, and improved quality of life for individuals and families impacted by epilepsy."

“This is my life’s work and an extraordinary time to join the Epilepsy Foundation. I feel privileged to be part of expanding the Foundation’s presence in communities across the country, bringing essential programs and services to support people affected by epilepsy and accelerate epilepsy research toward better treatment options,” said Dr. Buelow. “I know the struggles of people and families living with epilepsy, and am acutely aware of the services that are not yet available. The Epilepsy Foundation is determined to close this gap – and I am ready for this challenge,” said Buelow.

Currently, Dr. Buelow serves as Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Adult Health at Indiana University’s School of Nursing. She teaches in both the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs and is the co-director of the hospital nursing research committee. Dr. Buelow is also a member of several professional and editorial boards, and is an American Academy of Nursing Fellow.

Dr. Buelow has been honored for her work with epilepsy: Most recently, she was named the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists Researcher of the Year and received the Barron McBride Quality of Life award for her work with children with epilepsy and their parents. She also received the Pioneering Award from the Neuroscience Nursing Foundation.

Dr. Buelow received her PhD and MS from University of Illinois at Chicago, and her BSN from Northwestern University. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Joan Austin at Indiana University.
