Lamictal & Mirena Combination!

Wed, 05/23/2007 - 23:04
Hi all, I had a Mirena IUD insterted 5weeks ago. At the moment I am on 250mg Lamictal daily and 500mg Keppra every 2nd night and 250mg Keppra every other. Before I had the IUD the plan was to get me onto Lamictal and slowly come off the Keppra. I wasn't told till after but aparently hormones can stop Lamictal working or Lamictal can stop the hormone from working. Whilst I have not had a seizure on the two medications and the Mirena I am slowly trying to get off the Keppra. Has anyone had some experience with Lamictal and Mirena? Nadine

Hi everyone. I was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2001. I have been on lamictal ever since. I take 200mg a day, Im scheduled to get the mirena tomorrow but I'm scared now reading some of these comments. I don't need it for birth control because I had a tubalication 3 years ago. I was going to get it to help my heavy long painful periods. I do know that birth control pills do weaken the effect of lamicatal, I had to stop taking them because my levels were all out of whack. I'm really afraid that the mirena may cause my levels to drop and have multiple seizures until I finally increase my doses enough to be ok again. I really don't know what to do. :*(

I was told by multiple neurologists that lamictal interacts with hormonal birth control to make the lamictal less effective. I had a paragard IUD (no hormones) for several years and really liked it.

After getting the paragard removed I successfully got pregnant. Pregnancy also changes your hormone levels (of course) and requires an increase in dosage of lamictal to have the same level of the drug in your bloodstream. So far I've doubled my dose.
