Meds Refusal by a teen, Do any I.M. meds exist?

Wed, 03/01/2006 - 11:34
Are there any alternative methods to give meds for epilepsy? My son is very paranoid and refusing all my mouth medicines. I am very scared for him. Any suggestions? He would take an injection oddly enough either under the skin or intramuscular.

He has recently been diagnosed with some sort of probable seizure disorder, so he has not been on anything for epilepsy yet. However, he has been on multiple antipsychotics before they found the abnormalities in his EEG's suggestive of epilepsy. He simply refuses any and all medicines that he would have to take by mouth. I really appreciate your taking the time to answer me. Let me know if you can think of anything that can be taken on a daily basis. I have been told that there is nothing that can be given daily by intra muscular injection for epilepsy, only a few that can be given a time or two. Is this true? Thank you again. Andrea

Take a look at the medication section of epilepsy.com - some meds can be given by injection, such as Fosphenytoin, others can be given in rectal form, though that may not be best for a teen.

Thank you, I will do that. Can Fosphentoin be given on a daily basis? I had heard that shots for epilepsy can only be done rarelya few times only. It would really be helpful if it can be given daily if needed. Thanks!! And please let me know, ok? Andrea
