pregnancy and keppra

Tue, 12/27/2005 - 13:01
Hello everyone I am 28 years old, female, with JME. My doctor has switched me from Depakote to Lamictal and now Keppra. I take Keppra 1000mg a day. Is there anyone, who is on Keppra, who is pregnant or who has had a baby. There is a ton of information of Lamictal and pregnancy but not much of Keppra and pregnancy. My husband and I want to start planning for a family, but we are VERY nervous. My ob/gyn put me on a prenatal vitamin and extra folic acid. I would appreciate any information from anyone. -aspepath

I am currently on 1000 mg of Keppra 2x daily and 200 mg of topomax. I am 9 weeks pregnant. The Dr. is trying to slowly take me off the topomax. so far so good. My sister is also a speech pathologist. Do you have children? and were you on any medication? you didnt mention it? thanks for the input. Marie

Hi--I, too have JME & am almost 10 weeks pregnant on Keppra. Even before I got pregnant, I'd been on keppra & I totally love it. Lamictal didn't work for me too well but keppra has been awesome for me. So far so good. I did come close to having a seizure but my doc recommended I take lorazapam to avoid the seizure b/c it would be worse to actually have a seizure. He said the lorazapam was such a small dose & I wouldn't use it (hopefully) very often so it should be fine. I also take extra folic acid in addition to my prenatal. I know how you feel about not being sure what can or might happen being on keppra. I have total faith in my neurologist (neuro) & in God which helps keep my nerves settled. My neuro is a top doc in Seattle @ UW & Harborview. However, I get crazy ideas & get scared when I see a baby with cleft lip & wonder if that would happen to us but that is more common I hear in phenobarb use & pregnancy. I have an appt. tomorrow with my neuro. Hang in there! Amey
