pregnancy and keppra

Tue, 12/27/2005 - 13:01
Hello everyone I am 28 years old, female, with JME. My doctor has switched me from Depakote to Lamictal and now Keppra. I take Keppra 1000mg a day. Is there anyone, who is on Keppra, who is pregnant or who has had a baby. There is a ton of information of Lamictal and pregnancy but not much of Keppra and pregnancy. My husband and I want to start planning for a family, but we are VERY nervous. My ob/gyn put me on a prenatal vitamin and extra folic acid. I would appreciate any information from anyone. -aspepath

Was the Lamictal not working? My dr. took me off Depakote when I decided to start a family and put me on Lamictal. After a few break-through seizures he added Klonopin. I'm still taking those meds today, and have 2 healthy children. Keppra has only been out since January of 2005, I don't know if you will be able to find too much research published on it. I'm sure this didn't help much. But good luck!

Hi Kelandv The lamictal wasn't working for me. My seizure activity increased when I was ovulating or when I had my period. My doctor put me on Keppra only. It has been working for me. The only down side is that I can't skip or miss any doses. Back in October, I missed 2 doses and ended up in the hopital b/c I had 2 grand mal seizures. Since then I have set up reminders for myself so it doesn't happen again. Were you on depakote when you were pregnant? It is very difficult to find information on Keppra because it is so new. But talking to everyone has definitly helped. Good luck Aspepath

Hi everyone. Keppra is pretty new but not 2005. I have been on it since 2001. If you have grand mal like I do, we simply don't have the option of not taking a medication. However this is what my doctor has told me all along: you are zeisure free for a good period of time (10 months or so) they put you on the lowest therapeutical dose (which simply means the lowest dose that still works for you) and then you get pregnant. He has patients that are on more than one drug, including Keppra, and have had perfectly helthy babies. However, you cannot breastfeed. That is just what my doctors have said...if someone has more information, please share it with us.
