pregnancy and keppra

Tue, 12/27/2005 - 13:01
Hello everyone I am 28 years old, female, with JME. My doctor has switched me from Depakote to Lamictal and now Keppra. I take Keppra 1000mg a day. Is there anyone, who is on Keppra, who is pregnant or who has had a baby. There is a ton of information of Lamictal and pregnancy but not much of Keppra and pregnancy. My husband and I want to start planning for a family, but we are VERY nervous. My ob/gyn put me on a prenatal vitamin and extra folic acid. I would appreciate any information from anyone. -aspepath

To tell people not to use Keppra is an aweful thing to do.  Just because it did not suite you does not mean it will be bad for all people.  I've been taking it for 5 years now and I've had one seizure in that time frame so I think the odds are good in my case.  We all have different bodies and not all drugs will work the same for everyone.

HI everyone, I am 31YO and currently 6 1/2 weeks pregnant. I have had 3 abnormal EEGs this month and have seen two different doctors to get another opinion.  Both doctors think I should be on meds for potential seizures. They think I am having simple partial right now that could become complex partial because of the location of the abnormal discharges on the EEGs.  They both think I should take Keppra and 4 mg of folic acid.  When I went to the pharmacy the pharmacist told me I could buy the FA over the counter but I had to show him that it said 4 mg not .4mcg on the form.  He wouldn't give me the Keppra because he said it shouldn't be for pregnant women.  Of course, I left there upset. My doctor is now on a trip for the next week.

I'm so scared because I don't want to take meds if I don't have to. I'm scared that something will happen to my baby.  But at the same time I don't want to have a seizure while I'm driving or at the beach and then hurt us both.  I just don't know what to do.  Reading all of these posts have definately helped and made me feel a little better. I look forward to hearing from you all.
