pregnancy and keppra

Tue, 12/27/2005 - 13:01
Hello everyone I am 28 years old, female, with JME. My doctor has switched me from Depakote to Lamictal and now Keppra. I take Keppra 1000mg a day. Is there anyone, who is on Keppra, who is pregnant or who has had a baby. There is a ton of information of Lamictal and pregnancy but not much of Keppra and pregnancy. My husband and I want to start planning for a family, but we are VERY nervous. My ob/gyn put me on a prenatal vitamin and extra folic acid. I would appreciate any information from anyone. -aspepath

I'm 18 and just found out I am pregnant, just a month gone.

I take 2500mg keppra, 400mg lamotrigine and 2500 microgram a day.

Will this mentally/physically hurt the baby?!

 Need response asap!!!

This may be too late for "supergems"... looks like you're due any day, if you haven't already had your baby, but this may help you "lisaert"...

I was on Keppra 1000 mg/day for the first half of my pregnancy.  As I gained weight, my neuro put me on increasingly more, up to 2000 mg/day.  I also took a prenatal vitamin and 4 mg folic acid every day.  As soon as I delivered I went back to 1000 mg/day of Keppra, continuing to take the prenatal, but dropping the folic acid.

Everyone I spoke to about breastfeeding (neuro, OB, midwives, lactation consultants) told me that if it entered the breast milk that it was likely much less than what my daughter was getting inutero, so I went ahead and breastfed her, and continued for a full year.  They said that the benefits of her getting breastmilk outweighed the risks of the small amount of medication she might get.

She is now 27 months and is completely healthy.

I am now 6 weeks pregnant with our second child and plan to do the same thing with this one, unless there are significant findings between now and then.

Also, just so you know... from what I've read, Keppra is now the leading seizure medication prescribed to children.
