Auras and questions for my doctor

Sat, 10/26/2013 - 01:29

Why do I get so tired after I have an aura but no seizure? I have so many questions about everything. Where should I begin. I'm still unsure about what kind of seizures I'm having. Can keppra cause me to have weight gain? What is the best medicine out there? What should I ask the doctor? I have such a hard time focusing lately and remembering times and days and even counting money back! Its getting better but not completely. Also why do different patterns or lights like a disco ball make me have excruciating headaches and feel like I'm having an aura?

Thanks

Mollz

Morning

GOod questions. You might start with these questions. As for Auras they are seizures in themselves. Understand all a seizure is is an electrical impulse going off in your head causing a chain reaction. Seizures drain energy period. So if you have a aura you lose energy. As for Keppra and weight gain. I have used it for many years and I haven't gained weight. Actually some medications do cause weight gain because there is something in them that make you retain water. Countaing money back could be a problem with some people but with registers today it should be nooooooo problem they tell you how much to give back. Now 30-40 years ago people at the register had to key in the price and actually count the money back since no plastic cards were used. Without knowing which medications you have been on before or are taking now and what kind of seizures you have I have no idea which med might work for you. Today medications are being made to work on types of seizures so they work on the kind of seizure you have. Other meds work on all types. Consider the fact that I have many types of epilepsy I have many types of seizures. One that works on absence seizures might not work on complex partial

Hope this helps

Thanks for explaining about the auras. I thought they always preceded a major seizure, which is why I had a hard time accepting that the symptoms I had (strange smells, odd stomach sensation) as auras, as I didn't have a seizure after. I have had the auras for years (not knowing what they were, and because they seemed to be minor flukes, they weren't particularly distressing). With the recent seizure (my first one, I think they called it psychomotor? complex partial?) I remember having a horrible smell about 30 minutes prior to the attack. I am starting to get frequent headaches after some episodes of auras, but my doctor doesn't seem concerned. He just gave me some medication for migraines.
