Ethosuximide side effects

Wed, 04/24/2013 - 14:22
My 7 yrs. son was diagnosed with absence seizures about 2 days ago and was prescribed Ethosuximide. My wife decided to go with the liquid form. We give him 5ml in the morning and night. At night it seems he has no issues so far but the first morning I took him to his before/after school program he complained of feeling sick and by the time I got to work they phoned and told me had gotten sick and they could not watch him. He want to school after and make it through the day. This morning my wife gave him grapes and the medicine and took him to the before/after school program and he got sick in her Suv. She brought him home and he has been in bed all day. Anyone have any idea how to deal with the nausea?

unfortunately its a common side effect esp in children and while it can be given with or without food, I would suggest toast or something easy on the tummy, lots of small meals. Another suggestion candied Ginger to suck on helps with nausea or just a sugar free hard candy. if it keeps happening every day, talk to your doc about if the pill form would be better for him; taken with food it might be easier on his GI tract. Hope this helps a little

We think he had a touch of the flu when we first started giving it to him. Cut the dose to 2.5 ml in morning and evening and have had no further problems. Will up dose to 5 ml at night soon and go from there.
