Help with recovering from seizures?

Tue, 04/30/2013 - 06:18
Hey epilepsy.com!
I am not an epileptic, but one of my friends is. She frequently has seizures (partial seizures? Becasue while she can not talk, she can sign to us, does that sound right?) and the way she says for us to bring her out of them is to make her laugh. Making her laugh consists of hitting somebody about 90% of the time, and that has become unacceptable by now. Is there another way we can "bring her out" of these seizures, or is it safe to just let them run their course and she will be done herself? Thank you for the help!

Hi, seizures usually stop after 2-3 minutes by themselves. There are however techniques to stop them- for example, when sitting on the floor to jump up and move around. One person recited a bible verse, another a mantra when they had an aura. The concept is changing the current task/activity to another that uses a different part of the brain, which cancels the seizure (also works for grand mal with aura). This technique is easy to learn, just takes a little time to work out what works best. Maybe your friend could just laugh without any provocation- could also work.
