Gabapentin and pregnancy

Mon, 07/16/2007 - 08:37
Hello there, I am in a huge dilemma. I have been suffering from diffuse neuraliga for several years now and after seeing a consultant he finally diagnosed my pain and put me on gabapentin. I was on 900mg for a few weeks and then slowly weened myself off until I stopped taking them a few months ago when my pain had completely disappeared. Last month I found that I was pregnant but my pain seems to have come back (I think triggered off by the pregnancy hormones). I really want to go onto the gabapentin gain just to break the pain cycle but my dr said no. Is there anybody out there with experience of taking gabapentin during pregnancy as I think that my current state may be more harmful for my baby than taking a low dose of gabapentin..

I don't believe that gabapentin has shown significant problems with birth defects, however, they are still collecting data on people taking it alone. There is a Neurontin Pregnancy Registry as well as other registries which looks at large numbers of women taking these drugs during pregnancy. Each person needs to weigh the pros and cons of taking a medicine and of leaving the medical problem untreated. Also, the risk of drugs during pregnancy affecting the risk of major birth defects is most in the early weeks.
