Modified Atkins Diet for Kids

Wed, 06/04/2008 - 20:30

My son is 12 years old with partial complex nocturnal seizures. We have tried every drug out there, had an anatomical hemispherectomy and is still has nightly cluster seizures. Our neuro today told us there are no other drastic treatments she can think of right now - (she is pretty much giving up). We could look into VNS, but not for another year (although I am not looking forward to yet another surgery).

Have any of you tried the modified atkins diet, and have it work, even after failing many different AEDs? We half heartedly tried this a year ago, but we were more focused with the surgery (that I was told would "cure" my sons epilepsy). Anyhow, we could not get my son into Ketosis long enough to show any improvement in seizures. Plus I had so many questions, and no dietitian to consult with, we just gave up.

If there is anyone out there who had success with this diet and who's epilepsy is refractory to AEDs, I want to talk to you!!!
