We have a stress management program

Tue, 09/11/2007 - 17:36
Hi The Victoria Epilepsy and Parkinson's centre in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada has a stress management program. I attend this program and it has taught me some very useful skills in minimizing my daily stress levels. One of those skills is breathing in an effort to calm down whenever stress strikes or in an effort to relax before bedtime. It can be quite useful when you don't want to take something that might interact with your antiseizure meds. We even suggest ideas to each other and generate some humour to make people know they don't have to suffer alone.

Sounds good, Bleedingheart. The trouble with E, is that we know we have to reduce stress levels, but in some environments it's very difficult to do so. I am in what I call a high stress environment - unsure if it's my stress or general stress in the environment but I am surprised my brain doesn't wig out more often because of it.

sorry to interupt discussion....for E.H.

Hi My sympathies. I go to the stress management program once a week and there are seasonal breaks around summer and x-mas breaks. Because this program isn't always running, I have to find ways to cope with stress outside of the program. I tend to breathe in for a count of three and pause, then breathe out for a count of three. It is particularly helpful when I am in a mess of traffic. I believe that it is helpful to just take a brief moment to practise breathing techniques, even in the most stressful of moments. I also listen to music and place a very low priority on TV. Some days when I don't watch TV I feel much less stressed. And if something bad happens in my life on those days I think it could be a whole lot worse.
