Grad student with bad health insurance

Mon, 04/05/2010 - 20:26
I'll be starting a PhD program shortly. Through my current job, which i'm leaving in a week, I'll be able to get COBRA for 18 months. I'm eligible for the school's health insurance, but it is terrible. Although my seizures are fully controlled through medicine, I doubt it would even cover my two doctor visits a year. My main problem is that when my COBRA runs out, school insurance will cover me but will only cover $200 of prescriptions. My prescriptions cost about $15,000 per year. My tuition is paid for and I receive $15,000 by working 20 hours per week as a research assistant. I have no idea what I will do. It seems the only way I'll be able to get health insurance is if I get a job with UPS immediately so that their part-time work insurance will cover me when COBRA runs out. I don't have time to take this job. If ANYONE has any ideas, please let me hear them. I'm at a complete loss for who to even talk to. The school has been no help in providing me with information. Thank you.
