Teen Driving Insurance

Fri, 05/02/2008 - 14:02

Hi I'm not sure where to post this -- I might try another catagory too.

My son has JME and is fast approaching driving age.  Is there anything I should know about car insurance and epilepsy?   Do they charge extreme fees?  Do you have to declare it?  Anything would be helpful

I'll tell you this right now, speaking purely from experience, don't tell anyone he's epileptic, NOONE. Just get the insurance tell them nothins wrong, otherwise they will never even consider you for insurance. As far as they're concerned you don't even know what epilepsy is. Took me 15 years to finally realize that that's the best thing to do.

Hi There,

Every state has it's own laws about driving knowingly having epilepsy. Although I do not sell or have anything to due with insurance. Most states will revoke a drivers license if a person drives with epilepsy. Is your son's epilepsy under control? If not it is up to you to tell your insurance company that he does have it. If for instance he should have a seizure while driving and kill a family or innocent person, not to mention himself, it would be a difficult situation for him and your family. Most insurance companies will not cover him until he is controlled. He may not be issued a drivers license to top it off.

I don't want to rain on your parade and only hope he is under control with medication. It might be a good idea to  inquire about your son's situation via telephone to any insurance company without giving any personal information. Some states will hold you responsible for not disclosing his condition to your insurance company and you could lose everything you have including your son. I hope the best for you and your son :)

God Bless,

Sam
