Acne and lamotrigine vs. lamotrigine ER

Fri, 05/31/2019 - 11:55
Hi there, first time poster, I'm recent to the seizure club, due to an oligodendroglioma. Currently on Vimpat 200mg 2x d and lamotrigine 100 mg 2x d. I'm still titrating up the lamotrigine but have started having terrible acne on my face and neck. I am currently trying anything I can (typically snd supplements) with minimal improvement. I was curious if anyone with similar issues had their acne improve by switching to the Extended Release lamotrigine / lamictal. Studies on the extended release showed similar or better seizure control with less side effects, although I don't think they looked specifically at acne. Anyone made the change from immediate release to extended release and had improvements in acne? Thanks and best wishes! Travis

Hi Travis, I'm not sure if

Hi Travis, I'm not sure if this will help you at all as I'm still on normal Lamotrigine but I've been on normal Lamotrigine for 10 years now (300mg twice a day) and the only time I noticed an increase in zits was when I started taking them at 17 to early 20s this however could be blamed on a poor diet, alcohol consumption and age (I was a student...). Since age 24+ despite the increase of Lamotrigine my skin is normal. Like everyone I get the occasional Zit but overall my skin looks and feels good.I know you can't really compare zits to acne but from what I hear they are often caused by similar things.Like you I used as much anti acne/zit products as I could but they didn't seem to do much.Just my opinion but I think if the normal Lamotrigine is stopping/reducing your seizures and the acne isn't too painful then you may as well stick to the normal stuff for a bit longer as the acne may reduce/go away anyway.Hope this helps,Jonathan

I've got a lot of spots, but

I've got a lot of spots, but I don't know if they are related to lamotrigine. I'm coming off that (it made me quite sick), so I may be able to tell once that happens... I'm at a kind of age where there could be hormonal changes which could have caused the spots. ..
