Anyone have good results with Lamictal

Mon, 01/24/2005 - 11:30

Gosh seems like a lot of folks have not had good results with Lamictal.   My son is changing from Tegritol to Lamictal  (a long process).  He is currently at 300 mg a day Lamictal and will have a blood test this week to see if he is at the right dosage.   He needs to be at a 3 before we start the slow taper off.   The main reason to change is because of the cognitive side effects of Tegritol.   My son (16) is a sophmore 4 honor classes so it was a tough year anyhow and with the recent diagnosis tough as well.

He did have a grand mal in December - (lack of sleep) and we were tapering off Tegritol too early (long story - I won't go into it here).

When the drs say goal is to control the seizures through meds - does that mean seizure through meds?  When they say it's controlled (does that mean - no seizures for a year?)

Thanks

rc6002,

My son, who is 4 yrs old now, has been on Lamictal for about 3 months now and his seizures have stoped.  He was diagnosed with Epilepsy in Oct.  I think the Neurologist called it Generalized Epilepsy.  He was having Petit Mal seizures up to 6 or 8 a day.  I think its important to start the medicine at a very gradual pace and slowly increase until he gets to where he needs to be.  Every time we uped his medicine, I did notice small changes in him, but after a week or so they would go away.  The changes would be like hyperactivity after taking the meds, or his appetite seemed much larger after another increase, but it was back to normal a week later.  The worst side effect was he got a rash on his face which is what you need to watch for with this medicine, so I took him to the Dr. and he said it looked like Eczema not the rash and we treated it and it went away.  We didn't need to increase again after that time, so his seizures stopped at 15mg of Lamictal 2x a day.

My son also has a stutter that he had developed long before Epilepsy, but I have a post up about that as I was wondering if there was a link between speech problems and Epilepsy.  I don't think it has anything to do with the med. as he was stuttering long before he even started taking it.

I keep reading a lot of people not having success with Lamictal and a lot have a different type of seizure than my son.  I have been pleased so far.  It hasn't seemed to change his personality and he seems to have much more energy and he is just back to his happy little self.

Good luck!!  I hope your son has success!!

My 5 year old son has been diagnosed with LKS - a rare form of Epilepsy.

Seizures occur only in the speech processing part of the brain.

He is currently taking 125mg of Depakote 5 times a day and now his Dr. wants to add Lamictal to his daily meds.

Have you ever heard of LKS....any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

I think you sent me a thread regarding LKS asking for advice.

I don't know much about LKS, however, I posted a thread awhile back regarding  Epilepsy and Stuttering or Speech problems and someone had brought up LKS.  If you go back under General and search back for a thread about Epilepsy and Stuttering or Speech problems and scroll down, I think you could get some good infor and maybe send a message to Amy Q.  She seems to have a wealth of knowledge about LKS.  She was very helpful to me.

Let me know if you have trouble finding the tread.
