Can anyone help please - does this sound like a seizure?

Wed, 01/05/2005 - 15:34
Hi!I've been diagnosed with syncope after a 30-min. EEG was normal.I'm on trileptal, though, for another med. condition, and every time I take it, I have fewer symptoms. Really low dose, though.Seeing my neurologist this week, but thought Id ask - does this sound like a seizure? For example:At the beginning I get a weird pressure in lower abdomen. Then, I get blurred vision in my right eye. Then, I smell something gross (either burning or sour).A few minutes later, I get very dizzy/spaced out feeling and very weak and have to sit down/lie down. Don't lose consciousness though.Sometimes at this point I get muscle contractions in my arms or legs. Usually just one arm or leg. After that's over (about 10 min), I have pain in my arms & legs, am very tired, and still kind of dizzy. Then after about five more minutes, I'm left weak and tired, and tired for a long time afterward. I don't always remember the sequence of events so the other day I wrote it down before I forgot. There are variations on this but this is the most common thing that happens. Does anyone know whether these are symptoms of epilepsy too? I hope someone can help! I will talk to my MD this week but till then was curious. Thanks!!Amy

dear amy:hello my name is john. I have partal complex seizure disorder and youcould have the same but not to scare you you could have a mini strokalso. I strongly recomend a second opinion! second & third opinions never hert anyone.seizures are centrul nervous systum disorders so ther are a larg amount of things it could be. people tell you to keep a good outlookon things and they are right untill you find out definetly what you have. so stay calm and stress free as posible may be hard but it will help. things that afect the nervice systum can get worse just by geting stresed out. so get a second opinion totaly seprit from the group that you doc. is with. masterdelveP.S. E-mail me if you wont to and it may be hard but leen on family and close freinds there invaluable at this time.

I think you are right, She needs a second opinion.  She sounds like she has moer than one thing going on that hasn't been caught, yet, ebcause they are so focused on what is going on now.

FIrst seizures of that nature don't last 10 minutes.  I have them, too.  They last about 1-3 minutes.

The smell part is seizures stuff, but not sure about all this dizziness.  Then again, it could come back to smack us in the face, and she may have some rarer form of epilepy.

She needs to see a cardiologist, a neurologist, and her normal doc.

you're on the right track with this.

Hi Nancy,Thanks for your reply! I really do appreciate it. I know, that is the one thing that doesn't sound like a seizure, that is the time frame. Each part of the episode lasts no more than a few minutes, but the whole progression lasts about 10 min. Strange! I did think of something - the trileptal makes me dizzy! I started paying attention to when I take it, and for a couple hours afterward, my symptoms (in terms of the acute episodes) are much better, but I am kind of dizzy. I wonder if that's it?I'm seeing my normal MD, a neurologist, but not a cardiologist - I think that is a good idea! It crossed my mind too that maybe something else was going on that hadn't yet been caught and maybe a 2nd opinion might be a good idea if my neuro doesn't want to consider anything else. Thanks, again!!Amy
