Advice regarding coming off of Phenobarbital...

Hi!  I've been taking Pheno. for 26 years.  I have been taking it w/ either tegretol (I took it for 10+ yrs) and was switched to dilantin two years ago.  The dilantin isn't really working so to speak.  I'm going to have an EEG this morning.  The Dr. has said it will be hard to change medications...partiuclarly off of the phenobarbital..what should I expect??  Should I inquire about modifications for work?

Thanks,

shan

Hi Shan!I've been taking Phenobarbital about 8 years. Because that medication is very strong, stronger than other antiepileptics, I was switching to other medications almost about 2 years. My doctor said to me, that Phenobarbital is so strong that I have to switch it very slowly. I have been taking 100 mg, and every 6 months I droped 25 mg. I've been taking Tegretol CR with Phenobarbital, and doctor increased me dose of Tegretol, when he reduced me dose of Phenobarbital. Because of slow switching I haven't had problems.I am taking only Keppra now, because Tegretol alone wasn't good enough. And Keppra is very good for me.If you want something to ask me or if you didn't understand me very well, write to me.Good luck. Bye!Elena
