How long does it take to get used to side effects of Depakote

Tue, 08/22/2006 - 22:33
I have been on Depakote since July 13th. They started me out on different doses and increased it up to 500 MG of ER. About 3 weeks ago they increased that to 1000 MG. Can anyone tell me how long it takes for your body to get used to the side effects? I am nauseated frequently. I can't hardly stay awake, I am so tired and sleeply, all the time. I forget what I am doing most of the time and who I am doing it for. I hate this medicine. Also I feel achy and like my muscles or my skin hurts. Just wondering if these will go away? Mary

Mary, It's hard for me to be specific since I was put on Tegretol along with the Depakote. They nausea and sleepiness had just started wearing off around two months after starting the meds when Ativan was added and the nausea and sleepiness started all over again. It took another two months for the side effects to ease off. So my guesstament would be 2-4 months. I still get the muscle and skin soreness off and on. I wish you the best! -Spiz

I talked to the doctor last Thursday. He wanted a blood drawj to check levels and then on Friday he said Depakote level was fine but thought I may be having a reaction to Depakote and sent me back to lab for more blood work. Still waiting. Mary

Mary, You need to remember that everyone metabolizes meds differently. You may be experiencing side effects that someone else taking the same meds & dosage(s) won't experience. It is so individualized. Be sure to talk with your doctor about your concerns. Best of luck to you always.
