Tegretol - Depression

Sun, 02/10/2019 - 19:08
Hey Everyone! I need some advice on dealing with my brother in law, he’s 16 years old and has recently been diagnosed with tonic clonic epilepsy, his gp put him on 200mg of Tegretol while they were waiting for eeg results and a specialist appointment, when he saw his specialist his Tegretol dosage was increased to 800mg, since increasing the dosage he is suffering from severe depression and irritability. We are thinking of gradually reducing his dosage back to 200mg, would this be advisable? Will 200mg still work to prevent seizures? Is there any other medication you could suggest? Opinions please guys! Anything you can bring to the table would be greatly appreciated

He should not lower his dosage without his doctor'said say so. However adding a depression medication could help. Many people with epilepsy also have depression. Put yourself in his shoes, you recently got diagnosed with a siezure disorder and you will probably have to take it the rest of your life, you are a 16 year old young man with a lot of life to live, the medication slows your brain down, you probably will miss out on a lot of things, like concerts video games sporting events playing sports would you not be depressed and irritable?
