It is certainly possible for seizures/fits to cease though I believe the reasons for their doing so are not well understood. Likewise, the seizures may reappear many years later, again for no apparent reason. People frequently continue to take medications for a long time - sometimes tens of years - after their last seizure but how soon and in what manner AEDs might be reduced/eliminated altogether is a matter of debate. I suspect a certain inertia, too, is also involved in a decision not to discontinue a medication but the risk of the seizures re-starting always always hangs over someone who has 'had' epilepsy like the Sword of Damocles. I have had epilepsy (TLE) all my life and, though it is currently under control with 200mg/d Lamotrigine, it is sill lurking there - and reminds me of the fact with the occasional mild 'aura'. I consider myself fortunate. Chris

Hello, as for myself I can tell you I had pet-mal seizures until I was 13years old, then I grew out of seizures and I was taken off dilantin and phenabarbital (which I had taken since about 3years of age). Then at 24years old I had acomplex-partial seizure while driveing my car.The seizures didnt get under control until I had surgery in 1994.I still, not often have simple-partial.But yes, that monster still hangs over my head and probly will until the day I die. terri
