New Seizures in Toddler

Sat, 11/04/2017 - 14:06
Hello everyone, I'm new here and so lost and confused. As a child, I had 3 febrile seizures. My oldest, who is almost 8, had 11 febrile seizures between the ages of 13 months and 5 years old. Two days ago, I heard snorting over the baby monitor, and one of my 2.5 year old fraternal twin boys was having what looked like a tonic clinic seizure. We called 911 and the seizure lasted 15-20 minutes, until the emt administered a shot of something in the thigh to make the seizure stop. He was out if it for a few hours but finally started getting back his normal self then. We spent the night in the hospital under observation. He had a tiny fever in the hospital (37.6, if that even counts), but I don't think it seems like a febrile seizure. The day after, he was a little clumsier than normal, but he's better now. Today, We were running errands and he started falling asleep in his car seat. I noticed the tiniest little hand and foot movements, like twitches. I called his name and he opened his eyes a couple of times, but then fell asleep and stopped twitching. We have an eeg scheduled for 3 days from now, but I am so paranoid. I can't eat and can't sleep, and I just want to be with him every minute of the day to watch him and see what he does. I'm reading so much and it all scares me. Has anyone had any similar experiences with these seizures? Thank you!

well it’s a big shock but this is a long term deal to come to terms with, it’s not going to resolve any time soon. 11 febrile seizures seems like a lot but generally they are not a concern. family history can matter but most people who get a diagnosis of epilepsy do not have a family history of epilepsy. even genetic epilepsies are often just an error, not something passed down.take a video of your son’s twitching if you see it again (so you can ask) but know that there are a lot of sleep movements that aren’t seizures.

ps - I am not saying this isn’t epilepsy, because anyone who has a tonic clonic like that would have to have a major other reason for such and they would have looked at those possibilities in the hospital. if he’s been started on medication, the EEG might not catch as much as off medication. do know that a clear EEG does not exclude epilepsy.
