What should My 12 yr old expect during 48 hr eeg

Fri, 06/03/2011 - 14:40
My 12 year old daughter was just diagnosed with generalized epilepsy.  She had her first seizure in school about a month ago and then had another yesterday.  Her neurologist has scheduled her for a 48 hour eeg on Monday.  We're not really sure what to expect though, someone told me they sleep deprive patients to bring on a seizure.  I've witnessed 2 of her seizures and while I know she doesn't know whats going on it scares me and makes me feel so helpless watching her and knowing theres nothing I can do to help her.  We also believe she's been having absence seizures that we've mistaken for ADD.  This is all new to me and any advice would be so welcome.  I'm afraid to leave her alone, let her take a shower go out with friends and even go to school.  I'm sure this is a fear all parents of children with epilepsy must live with.  I can't imagine how our children must feel.

Hi I understand how you feel I have 3 kids and all three of my kids had seizures with high temp every time the temp gets high the would have a seizure I Became their Doctor, when I took them all to the doctor for the seizures the doctor told me you have to be your kids doctor at home and he was not lieing and the have Asthma so I was busy I didn't know how strong I was and their father has Epilepsy. My daughter still have seizures when her temp get high so I have to make sure I don't let her temp get high when she gets I cold I have to take her to the doctor for meds so she won't get a temp and have a seizure so far I have been doing good she hasn't had on in a year and a half. My other child was having them and he didn't have a temp I know something was not right I took him in to have a 48 hr in the hospital over night and they said he was having seizures in his sleep he was 11 at the time so he was diagnosed with Epilepsy and the doctor started him on med Depakote 250 mg twice a day and he is 15 now on the same med and that's is all he takes and it stopped his Seizures he has not had a seizures since he stated the med when he was 11yrs old, and his father is doing good on his meds too, I have been a buzy body I hope that I was helpful to you. Good luck!

I can totally relate. Im demanding a in hospital 48hr this week. My 12yr old son has had two sleep deprived EEGs and were still doing the medication dance. They have gotten progressively worse. He recently had 3 in 6days. And they are bad now, grand mal seizures. He just checks out, falls like a ton of bricks and turns blue....its horrible. We watch him like a hawk. I swear the kid can't fart without us asking if he's ok ;)

He has no idea its happened. He falls asleep after it happens then comes too and asks" Did I have a seizure?" But it ruins him for at least 3hrs. He's totally out of it or just sleeps. We are extremely hesistant to start him in school in a couple weeks. I may homeschool him until we get it under control. Hopefully you can get some answers. Keep us updated

From my understanding a 48hr EEG is an inpatient stay at the hospital where he will be hooked to the EEG and they will watch for when seizure activity happens. Any factors that may be causing them, etc.....good luck
