Can Topamax trigger seizures?

Thu, 08/25/2016 - 03:13
I had couple of seizures at the age of 9 and was diagnosed as photosensitive epilepsy and never got any treatment, doctors have advised my parents that it should fade out at adulthood which did stop at he age of 11. I have not had a single seizure for 20 years, and in April 20, 2016 I had a grand map seizure during my sleep which was completely stress and sleep deprive related. My EEG was positive and doctors advised that I should start on Keppra 1000mg a day. I heard that everyone was allowed one seizure (since this was not related to my first epilepsy). I started taking my meds on June 1, 2016, and i started having headaches and felt very weak. On June 6 my doctor advised me to try Topamax and that Keppra might not have suited me. Two days after starting Topamax I had another seizure on June 10. Could Topamax have caused this? I still believe that my April seizure was stress related and should not have started on meds… has anyone been in similar situation? I have increased my Keppra to 1500mg and stopped Topamax, please help me, I am to sure what to do.

at 9 you had a couple of seizures and you had one in April. So that means more then 1 seizure. Also the EEG was positive. Meaning it showed spikes or waves aka abnormalities or seizure activity. A medication that can stop  seizures can also cause them. Did your neurologist increase your keppra or did you?? It takes a few weeks for your body to get used to the medications and the therapeutic levels to get where the neurologists want them. Stress can and does trigger seizures so yes watch out of a lot of stress, But the eeg and your other seizures is also what they needed to diagnose you with epilepsy'Relax and take your meds. With keppra the number of my seizures went down. The time in those seizures was reduced from 5-8 miutes to a few seconds.I hope this helpsJoe
