Depakote and Pregnancy

Wed, 02/09/2005 - 22:26
I am a 26 yearold female with epilepsy. I have partial seizures. My doctor told me to take one of my depakote pills a day. Which is less than what I have taken before. What I want to know is what kind of damages can it do to my Baby? I am 4 months pregnant. Can anyone help me?

Have you been on Depakote for any length of time?  What dosage are you taking.  My daughter, who plans on starting her family next year is changing meds and geting off  depakote because of a smaller change of birth defects.  Spinal Bifda is the most common while on Depakote.  Are you just now starting the meds?

Here are a few links regarding depakote and pregnancy. It is always best to consult with your epilepstologist about the best treatment with the least risks for both you and the baby. You might also consider registering with the North American AntiEpileptic Drug Registry: http://aedpregnancyregistry.org/

I am currently on Depakote, going to start to have a family once I made the switch to Lamictal. Depakote is categorized as a D, while Lamitacal is a C - it will be better for the baby to go to a C. But lowering your dosage is really risky - I wouldn't recommend it. It is better for you to be safe, and health when you carry your child.I would speak to a neuro, I can't believe the he said to lower your dosage
