My kids are now 8 and 10. I was diagnosed with Nocturnal Epilepsy about 5 years ago. I currently have seizures every few months but fortunately only in my sleep. Up until 1 year ago I was a single mom. For a few years I had a live in helper so I didn't worry about having a seizure around the kids. She moved out to start her own family so I found I started to worry about the kids finding me in a seizure and no adult in the house. My boyfriend (now husband) was the only one to have seen me have a seizure. We sat the kids down and told them what sometimes happens to Mommy and not to panic. We explained how my body would convulse and that they should make sure to stay clear of me. We suggested that they use the phone to call my boyfriend and he would talk them through it. We lived on different islands so he couldn't just come over. We have since married and are together 99% of the time. My kids have never seen me seize but they were glad to have some understanding of what could happen and how to handle it. Just knowing they could call someone helped a lot.

I would suggest to explain the best you can and to make sure they know what to do if mommy has a seizure. We had our phone set up that if something happened that my one son would just hit one phone number to call daddy. Take care Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question, i've tried to talk to my eldest daughter in a not too serious way and have just got her a card explaining my epilepsy and meds etc with a contact number in case anything happens. The youngest two children are in cots so if it happened in the night i figured at least they would come to no physical harm being in there and i've shown my daughter how to use phone etc if something does happen. Thanks again really appreciate your help!
