Pregnancy and Trileptal

Mon, 12/31/2018 - 11:30
Hi ladies, I have been on Trileptal for about 17 years. I started when I was about 15. My husband and I are going to try getting pregnant but I was wondering if anyone had any issues or if there were any birth defects while on it? My doctor said it is very slim but I wanted to get the advice of women who may have actually been through it. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I was on my seizure meds for

I was on my seizure meds for 15 years.  My husband and I wanted to get pregnant and were told to go off all of my meds. I was on Tegretol and Lamictal. That was back in 2000 though .Maybe doctors didn't know as much. Not a good idea.  The experience I had was my seizures increased the farther I was in my pregnancy. I also had more seizures on birth control.  What ever chemical is in birth control or is produced by your body when you are pregnant stimulated my seizures.  The good news is my baby was healthy and is now 18.  She has never had a seizure.  If you go off the med or decrease the dose be careful to get the right dose the next day after you have the baby. You body looses blood in delivery and it can mess up the amnt of medicine you take.  I took my regular dose of my seizure med the next day and it was too high. It made me see double for hours.  I had to close one eye so I wouldn't see two of everything.  Good luck with your med.  Just make sure you talk with your doctor about the right dose to take the next day after the baby is born.  You might have to increase the dose while pregnant.  I'm not sure about Trileptal , just that pregnancy by itself can effect your seizures.  I wish you well.
