Seizures and Menstral Cycle

Thu, 09/21/2006 - 12:37
I've been having seizures since I was 12. Oddly enough when I started having my period. My first 2 seizures were around my period. Also if I have ever forget to take my meds (Ooops!) around my period I would have a seizure...if I'd forget to take my meds any other time of the month I would have a seizure. There's a name for this seizure disorder but I can't remember the name. I don't have my neurologist convinced yet because I haven't been going to her for very long. I'm pregnant right now so that's a little scary too. I'm constantly worried about if the baby's gonna be healthy and perfectly normal. Four more months and I'll know. Anyways, I'm just curious if there's many other people out there with the same seizure disorder as me of if they know they have it or think they do! Olena from BC

Olena from BC I have the exact same thing as you (with the menstural cycle, that is) Started when my periods started (I was 17) and my cycles were very abnormal. I didn't even put 2&2 together until my 1st pregnancy and several seizures (I had 4 pregnancies - 1 birth) My daughter is exceptionally healthy. The others were basically due to the 1st was tubal and bad surgeons which caused a second tubal in the same tube (that was supposidly taken out) and the story goes on......but don't worry - my child is a-ok. What meds are you on, that would have more effect than anyhing. I was on tegretol, dilantin, phenobarbital & diamox. The ob said that going off the meds were more dangerous to the baby than the meds themselves If your 5 months pregnant and have had no complications yet, then feel good - everything will be fine lol

I'm on Topomax. I used to be on Tegretol but I asked my neurologist to switch me to something else because of the weight gain side effect. I particularly like the weight loss side effect of Topomax. It keeps my weight more regular. :o) I think my pregnancy has been so great because my neurologist put me on 5mg of folic acid before I even knew I was pregnant. I'm not planning on breastfeeding though because Topomax is too new of a medication and there hasn't been enough studies done on it. My neurologist also told me that she thinks there's a better medication for me to be on, so I'll probably be switching after this pregnancy. Hopefully to something that's better during pregnancies.
