Valproic Acid, Carbazapine & Water Retention

Thu, 10/12/2006 - 13:37
Hello, I am a newbie to the site. I've at E since I was 9 months, I'm 42 now so I can could call it all my life. I had Petit Mal as a child but they have gotten even less severe now. I drive but may get the occasional aura and seizure in my sleep. I'm on 2000 mg of Valproic Acid (Depakene) and 800mg of Carbazapine (Tegratol) split in 2 doses morning and night. I was familiar with a lot of the side affects but never realized how many there were after reading alot of forums on this site. I had a Cancer tumor in my Right Kidney last year and had it removed. I was also diagnosed with High Iron at the same time. The Iron can cause damage to the Liver, Pancreus & Heart. I've noticed since I had my Right Kidney removed that the weight has started to put on, mostly in the middle. I also have very bad swollen ankles alot of the time. I also have ringing of the ears which seems to be getting louder every year. Is a lot of this side-affects of my medicine?

Hello, Well, I can say that the side effects of Depakine are: * Hallucinations * Menstrual irregularities * Depression and psychiatric problems * Anemia * Rashes * Unexplained bleeding or bruising * Double vision * Allergic reactions * Weight gain Source: http://www.drugdelivery.ca/s3666-s-DEPAKENE.aspx and that of Carbazapine are: Immediate common side effects which are usually transient include drowsiness, unsteadiness, nausea and dizziness. Less common immediate effects include aching limbs, bowel irregularity, dry mouth, headache, a sensitivity to sunlight, sore tongue, hair loss and rarely sexual problems. None of these are medically dangerous and all disappear on stopping the medication. Most of the symptoms also go away when one persists with the treatment. * Headache * Allergic reactions Source: http://www.aware.ie/online%20books/carbamaz.html#15 Well from what I read it seems that what you are having is not due to the medication but I'll advise you to see a doctor for a diagnosis...

The constant ringing in the ears (tinnitus) is a known side effect of Tegretol. Thanks to Tegretol, I have tinnitus also. http://www.t-gone.com/tinnitus/drugs.asp
