Emotional wellness involves being aware of your feelings, mood, and behavior. It means being able to accept feelings and being aware of changes. It means also finding ways to enjoy life despite your challenges.

Emotional wellness is important for all of us—people with epilepsy, family members, other caregivers, and friends. Mood disorders, depression, and anxiety can have a direct impact on our emotional health. These problems can also affect how we feel physically. They can affect other health problems too.

  • For people with epilepsy, some mood disorders happen more often than in people without epilepsy. Recognizing symptoms of depression or anxiety may be complicated or mistaken for seizures. In addition, side effects of medicines may complicate the picture. Treating changes in your mood also needs to consider treatment for your epilepsy.
  • For loved ones and caregivers, paying attention to your own emotional health is important too. Caring for others and living with epilepsy can be stressful. Often family and friends need to take time from work, school, or other family commitments. Meeting competing needs causes added stress and challenges. Unhealthy caregivers cannot give their best care to their loved ones.

There are many ways to improve emotional health. Techniques such as meditation, journaling, art therapy, and cognitive behavior therapy can help people understand and manage their feelings and needs better.
