Advocacy in school for our children

Wed, 01/11/2006 - 18:20
Each child who receives special education services is entitled to an Individualized Education Program, devised by parents, teachers, educational administrators, and others. Information from the US Department of Education on the IEP can be found at the following: http://www.ed.gov/parents/needs/speced/iepguide/index.html When dealing with teachers and school administrators, it is best to know your rights, and the rights of your child as stated under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Personally, I have had a lot of experience in developing IEP's for my daughter Jessica (who has epilepsy), and many foster children who we were lucky enough to help parent throughout the years. Knowledge is power in dealing with educational institutions. Barbie

If you need to find a parent advocate a good place to look is at taalliance.org You would go to the map and look in your state. each state has at least one agency that should be free to parents. donna
