New movie with stigma about having seizures

Wed, 06/01/2005 - 22:31

Finally rented out the newly released movie titled, Racing Stripes, watched it and one actress has a part about thinking that one horse wouldn't jump, claiming that it had something to do with the horse having a seizure.

Wonder if any smart remarks would have been part of the story, if the horse had cancer, or other hidden medical disorder. Pretty something considering that this movie rated PG in the category of family favorites.

Stigma and discrimination continuing on and on.

Bruce,

Thanks for the movie review.  My daughter wants to see it so badly, but sad to say now she wont...Funny though, she was riding horses  for theraputic reasons and had to stop because her seizures got so bad.  The thing about it, she wouldnt think about her seizures, it would break her heart to think  that the horse has seizures....she has such a passion for them... take care!

We watched the movie also.  I guess I tried to make light of it to my son and go on with the rest of the movie. It's so sad when the say something like that. We did enjoy the movie and tried to over look that part.  It's so sad that movies had to have stigma about having seizures. Just my opinion!!!

Blessings,

Kristi

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I am sorry to think that my daughter did go see it at a birthday party. She never said anything about it...she is really sensitive to me about my seizures so perhaps she thought it would upset me...Bruce, you are so right that they would never make so light about someone with cancer or something like that, but unfortunatly, there are a lot of illnesses that the media pokes fun at--turretts syndrome, multiple personality disorder, etc. On another more positive movie note, have any of you seen Garden State? It has a much more positive (in my opinion) presentation of what it is like to have epilepsy. It isn't the central theme of the movie--in fact when I mentioned it to friends and family that Natalie Portman's character had epilepsy they all went "Oh, yeah, I forgot about that". But, she talks a little about having to laugh at what you can't change because otherwise you might cry all the time...Anyway, perhaps someone here with talent should write a screenplay about what it is like to live with E--it could start with little bits from a site like this one and then show the character behind each posting...their life, their conditions, how they cope...and then how they connect to the other people on this site...It may not be sexy to some people, but it is truly a human drama...maybe I need to start writing this...hmmm...toni
