Lamictal side effects

Wed, 03/22/2006 - 23:00
I am 22 years old and, have been on Lamictal for about seven months. I just had my first grand mal seizure in July of 2005, and they started me on medicine in August. I was wondering if anybody has experienced moodiness on this medicine. I am not sure if it is the medicine or the fact that I am having a hard time accepting this. It does not seem fair that I should start having seizures at this age. Since October when the doctor upped my medicine, I have also started stuttering. I was just wondering if anybody else has had these problems with Lamictal. Susan

Susan - I'm on 125mg Lamictal. Since starting it in Jan 2004 the only side effects I've encountered are headaches, insomnia, and I'm always hyper. I have occasional mood swings, but mostly it just makes me really happy and giggly, which is wonderful compared to other AEDs I have tried. Medications work differently for everyone and you may not experience the same side effects that I do. Hope it all goes well for you xoxo -Jeni.

Here is a link to general info about Lamictal - www.epilepsy.com/medications/b_lamictal_intro.html Everyone does respond differently - make sure you write down notes of how you feel and share with doctor. Lamictal is one of the meds that tends to have a mood stablizing effect and is actually used to help some mood disorders. Like all drugs, it could worsen mood. Mood changes could occur or be related to the effect of the seizures on the brain, or as you point out, on what you are going thru trying to adjust to living with seizures. Ask the doctor if there is a psychiatrist, social worker or counselor to talk to who may be able to help. Speech/stuttering problems could be medication or seizure related, or maybe a separate problem so talk to doctor about what is happening, when started, how often, etc. Best wishes, Epilepsy.com Resource Specialist
