Depakote ER -- 250mg, once in the morningDepakene -- 250mg at dinner. The ER is time released and works all day. As for the Depakene, this is not time released and peaks about 4 hours after being taken with most of the active ingredient out of the system after 8 hours. Our son has only had his seizures at night and all but one in the first 15 minutes of sleep explaining why we want the spike to 500mg at bed time.Dosage of any medication depends on body weight so don't focus on the amounts listed above. Our son has had no seizures since we finally balanced the meds before Christmas.Hope this helps-- kodankk

My son takes Tegretol. He has only been on it for 3 weeks, but so far not one seizure! I am glad to see that he is not having any side effects at all. He takes 100 mgs in the morning and 100 mgs at night. His doctor started him off slowly with half a pill each time. He has now worked up to the full dose. At first he wanted to put him on Depakote, but he said that it had the potential to cause liver problems in children 10 and under. Since he is 10, and right on that line he decided to go with good ol' Tegretol. It is a pretty tried and true anti seizure med.
