rash from topomax?

Sat, 07/08/2006 - 22:10
I started taking 50mg of Topomax a day about a month ago, combined with 900 mg of Trileptal (which I have been on for quite some time). A couple of weeks ago I began to develop this terrible rash which has now spread all over my body. I saw a dermatologist and he and my neurologist both do not feel that it is the Trileptal, even though this can be a side effect. They suspect the Topomax and now have me off of it. (I'm still in misery waiting for the rash to go away). Has anyone else had this problem with Topomax? Thanks!

I am not a epileptiologist & haven't seen your rash; but ,generally, rashes are indicitave of something else. Given the known fact that AED meds can suddenly stop working (known as the honeynoon effect) it also follows that after taking meds (albeit for a long time) a reaction could suddenly appear. If it were me, unless an epileptologist (a neurologist that is subspecialized in & focuses on epilepsy told me otherwise) I'd want off the Trleprtal immediately. (Remember neither plain neurologists nor dermatologists are specialists in epilepsy.. both have huge areas in which they specialize.) ~sol

Thanks for the information. The rash got a lot worse and spread all over but is now starting to get better. I'm not itching much anymore - it just looks bad at this point. But definately on the upswing. They discontinued the topomax on July 7 and said that it could take a few weeks to work its way out of my system so if that's the case and the itching is now stopping, the timeline works......I'm keeping my fingers crossed......I'll talk to my doctor more about the trileptal though. Right around the time that it started, they were messing with my trileptal dosage but didn't seem to think it was an issue still. We'll see. Thanks again.
