looking for advice....I really need to hear from those who have had surgery

Mon, 04/27/2015 - 12:51

Hi everyone, I have gotten mixed responses from people, but I really need to hear from those who have undergone surgery.....is surgery really worth it?  Do you feel it has benefited you and made you better?  Until I actually meet and talk to the neuro-surgeon next month, I won't know her thoughts, the benefits, risks, etc in my case....I can just be very pessamistic and always think the worse, but I'm trying really hard to be hopeful and this feels like my last option....my neurologist recommends surgery, but cannot tell me what to do....I can either go on the way I'm going, which I don't like.....I want my life back, I want my license back, I don't want to worry about having another seizure, etc.  I just need to know that if I have surgery, that their is a good chance of me becoming seizure free or at least get my seizures under control and not get worse.  Compared to a lot of others, my case isn't as severe, but even 1 seizure is 1 too many....I don't want anymore....I just wish they knew what was causing me to have seizures, why are they so sporadic, etc.  I've had numerous tests, take my medications religiously, etc but I still have them....like I said above, I just really need to know if surgery is worth it..I want to move forward, not backwards.  Any responses would be helpful...thanks

Surgery was worth it! Did it

Surgery was worth it! Did it eliminate all of the activity? No. But I went from about 40 seizures every year to about 2! I would do it again!

I had a left temporal

I had a left temporal lobectomy 11 years ago.  My surgery was very successful, as far as the seizures were concerned, but I was very "unprepared" for the side effects. I'm still very glad that I had the surgery, but I definitely tried to go back to my "old self" way too quickly!I was a full-time Music Teacher, and returned to my job 6 months after my surgery. That was in 2004. Since then, I've taken 3 "medical leaves," and finally made the hard decision to resign this past summer. I really loved my job, but after my surgery my short-term memory was terrible, and I've had lots of problems with anxiety and depression.  The only times I've had my "aura" or a mild seizure over the last 11 years, were when I got "overloaded" with stress due to my inability to do my job!  I was completely incapable of learning how to do the online grading and lessons, even though my good friends tried to help me out over and over.  I would definitely recommend the surgery, but don't try to do too much too soon! Go slowly, and see what you can handle!
