Hormones causing Seizures

Mon, 04/03/2006 - 12:26
I have been having hormone problems for a short time now. Stress and anxiety have become a big factor. I have been using progesterone and it has helped. But things seemed to change now. Any little thing I have to do is a big issue, and is very stressful and will end up with a seizure. Has anyone did something else to help the seizures that are coming from hormone problems? I have tried to increase the meds, and that does nothing for me. I have used Ativan on occasions. Is there anything else that can be done? thanks Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

Hey Lisa,

I just began taking birth control pills to prevent seizures.  Like clock work, 2 days before my period, I have seizures for 2 days.  I got pregnant, had the baby and nursed her for 17 months.  Only had seizures which would regularly happen monthly, 4 times in a year and a half.  Again just prior to menses.  I just started on a birth control pill and I did not take the pill the same time each day for the first week.  Guess what... not only did I spot or get a period, I also got really sick with seizures for 2 days.  OBGYN warns I need to take the pill at the same time each day.  Not within the 6 hours I was taking it from day to day.  Point here is that there is another side of epilepsy treatment.  In conjunction with our anti epileptic drugs... our horemones.  WOW!  Hope we can all find some recovery in discovery!

PS:  I can relate to the take an extra Keppra pill and take adavan when the pre menses seizures occur.  This is a new drug (take birth control for seizures?) I would not have even thought about years ago!   And yes, Stress and lack of sleep also induce seizures for me.  So we will always need the regular keppra, adavan and rest.

Hi Lisa I also get seizures due to my hormones especially during my menstrual period. Please don't increase your meds without your doctor's consent due to the fact that having too much of the AED's in your blood level can also bring on extra seizures. I asked my GP if he would prescribe me with the Progestrone cream like you suggested, but he didn't think it would help me by the stuff absorbing through my skin. Best of Luck and Take Care Teri

Progesterone cream has helped me a great deal. But things just have changed. The ativan I take when I am having days like today and I feel a seizure is coming on. My doctor had perscribed them to me. I will not increase my meds since I have ativan. Progesterone helped so much with heat flashes...and some seizures take care Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/
