No diagnosis/need help

I've had epileptic seizures since I was 19. I'm about to turn 29. I've had two neurologists and neither have given me a diagnosis other than "It's genetic". Well no one in my family is aware of any history of epilepsy. I had a grand mal on 1/5 after being "weaned" of Depakote". My neurologist told the ER doctor to do a pregnancy test although my tubes are tied. They didn't do a CT. I've only had one MRI done, when I was 19. My doctor has only performed EEGs and sent me for blood tests. He put me on Lamictal after the seizure. My husband and I are fed up and ready to travel if necessary. I'm in NC. Does anyone have suggestions on what I should do? Thanks

Hi.. I'd suggest you look for an epileptologist. Despite having E since I was a very young child, and seeing many neurologists, I was never controlled until I saw an epileptologist. To find an epileptologist (a neurologist that specializes in E) in the USA, go to www.epilepsy.com.. top of the page & third from the left. When you add your location, it will list all the neurologists in your district. Then you can phone them and inquire if any is an epileptologist. Of those on the list from my city.. all were epileptologists. wishing you the best, ~sol

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will look for an epileptologist and see what we can find out. Paula

I completely agree -- look for an epileptologist. I went to too many general neurologist, who really did not provide me with the best care. Not that they were bad doctors, but they did not have specialized knowledge of epilepsy. BTW - I have JME, which is genetic. I also don't know of anyone in my family who had/has epilepsy.
